This new guide from the Health Research and Education Trust, the research and education affiliate of the American Hospital Association (AHA). According to the guide, it is imperative that hospitals and health care systems not only understand the diverse patients and communities they serve, but the social, health, and business benefits of becoming a culturally competent organization. According to a recent survey by the AHA Institute for Diversity in Health Management, 81% of hospitals educate all clinical staff during orientation about how to address the unique cultural and linguistic factors affecting the care of diverse patients and communities, and 61% of hospitals require all employees to attend diversity training. Among the steps that hospitals can take discussed in the guide are community surveys, community engagement, and staff engagement.
