This useful guide, updated for 2011, is jointly published by the American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), American College of Physicians, Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), eHealth Initiative, and Center for Improving Medication Management (a collaboration of AAFP, MGMA, Surescripts, BlueCross BlueShield Association, Human and Intel).
Given the rapid adoption of electronic prescribing, especially with the implementation of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act and changes in the Medicare Fee Schedule, the guide provides practical guidance for physician practices to understand and implement electronic prescribing. It describes the HITECH Act requirements for qualifying for incentive payments for the “meaningful use of certified electronic health records” which includes electronic prescribing and contains a “buyer’s guide”, frequently asked questions, and references to resources. The guide also contains an informative section and detailed appendix on E-Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS).
